Lash serums after 40: what changes in the growth cycle

Growth phases shorten with age, which is why the same product reads differently at 45 than at 28 — and how to adjust the routine.

In short: With age the growth (anagen) phase of lashes shortens and lashes become finer. Serums still work after 40, but expect a slower curve, prioritise conditioning and tolerability, and commit to at least 16 weeks.

Many readers first look at lash serums in their forties, when lashes that once needed nothing start to look sparse on camera. The biology explains why — and why the same serum can seem to work differently for you than for a friend in her twenties.

The lash growth cycle in brief

Each lash moves through three phases: anagen (active growth, roughly 30–45 days), catagen (transition, two to three weeks) and telogen (rest, often several months) before it falls out and is replaced. At any moment most of your lashes are resting.

What changes with age

  • Shorter growth phase — each lash has less time to reach full length.
  • Finer lashes — the hair shaft becomes thinner and breaks more easily.
  • Hormonal shifts — changes around perimenopause and menopause can affect hair everywhere, lashes included.
  • Drier skin on the lid — more prone to irritation from fragrance or alcohol.

Adjusting the routine

  1. Choose tolerability first. Fragrance-free, oil-free, fully disclosed formulas. Our ranking weights tolerability at 20%.
  2. Allow 16 weeks, not 12. A shorter growth phase means changes build more slowly.
  3. Stop the damage. Waterproof mascara, curlers and rubbing off eye make-up break fine lashes faster than any serum can replace them. Use a gentle micellar or balm remover.
  4. Apply at night, on bare skin. Follow our step-by-step application guide.
  5. Move to maintenance, not zero. After the full result, keep going three or four nights a week.

When to see a GP

Gradual thinning with age is normal. Sudden lash or brow loss, patchy loss, or loss together with fatigue, weight change or hair loss elsewhere can point to thyroid problems, alopecia areata or other conditions. A serum will not fix those, so speak to your GP first.
